The Birth of the Ministry

WCC (We Care Connection) was born out of one family’s desire to teach their children about people who are less fortunate than they. They shared with the Bethel Church of the Nazarene’s church board how instead of partaking in the annual Thanksgiving church dinner they would be going to the streets to delivery lunches to the homeless. The board “jumped on board” and in November 2005 thirteen adults and children went to the homeless with blankets, scarves, gloves, and lunches.

On the third trip out, one lady kept asking one of the teen, “Why? But why?” The teenager answered, “Because we care.”

“Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet” Matthew 22:9 NRSV

Christ commands us to share the Good News of salvation with all who will listen. In Matthew 22, Jesus tells a parable referred to as “The Parable of the Wedding Feast.” In it, Jesus describes a king who sends out his servants to invite guests to the feast of the wedding of his son. He does this three times, and each time, those invited refuse to come. So the king then tells his servants to go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone they can find. The servants do so, and the wedding hall is filled with guests. The wedding feast represents the union of Christ and His Bride, the Church, in Heaven. The reference to the street corners in the parables is exactly as described: the Lord invites everyone to attend His feast – those on ordinary street corners, down rat infested allies, or under dark bridges.
